Facial paralysis

Facial paralysis can have a profound effect on everyday life. When the facial nerve is affected, the muscles on one side of the face may become weaker or stop moving normally. This can make facial expressions, speaking, eating and drinking more difficult. It can also affect how you feel about your face and how you experience yourself.

One of the best-known forms is Bell's palsy, also called idiopathic peripheral facial paralysis. Facial paralysis can, however, have other causes, and the treatment and recovery can vary depending on the underlying cause.

If facial paralysis develops suddenly or unexpectedly, it is important to seek medical assessment first. Alongside my acupuncture training, I have many years of experience as a speech therapist, with particular knowledge of facial movement and the way changes in facial function can affect communication and everyday life. I bring this experience into my acupuncture practice.

In treatment, I look at your individual situation and symptoms, as well as what matters most to you at that moment. My aim is to offer careful, supportive treatment alongside the medical or rehabilitation care you may already be receiving.
